Death Doula FAqs
Facing a terminal diagnosis is overwhelming. Death doulas provide spiritual, emotional, and practical support to people in their final stage of life. They help to normalize death and death conversations with you and the important people in your life. Their goal is to provide compassionate guidance and support at every stage of your death journey so you can live well until the end.
Why would I need a death doula?
Unlike hospice, death doulas provide no medical or clinical support. Doulas are a wonderful complement to a hospice team and often work alongside hospice. In fact, many hospices are beginning to employ doulas. Doulas can give you the gift of time, where hospices may have limitations on time, funding, and staffing.
How are death doulas different from hospice?
When should I contact a death doula?
We are all on our journey toward death. Doulas can be contacted at any point on that journey. Whether you have just received a terminal diagnosis, or you’re healthy and want to begin the important discussions around end-of-life. We are available to support you at any stage.
how are death doulas trained and certified?
Currently there is no governing body regulating death doulas and no training is required. However, most death doulas decide to invest in training and become certified. There are many reputable training programs ranging in scope, depth, and focus.
Are Death doulas just for the dying? Can I hire you as the loved one of someone at end of life?
Death doulas are most often supporting individuals AND their loved ones as they navigate the final stages of life. Doulas are often engaged by the family or friends of individuals approaching end-of-life to offer guidance, and comfort as they confront their impending loss. In some cases, we may not even meet the dying person.
